In September of 1975, Founding Father Augustin Garcia entered Kean College as a freshman. A politically active individual, he ran for a position on the freshman student council and became the first Latino elected to the Kean College student government. A man of vision, he was concerned over the disunity among the Latin students and took it upon himself to begin to organize the Latinos at Kean. From September to November of 1975, Founding Father Garcia and a group of other students met to find the solution to uniting the different Latino groups on campus. Founding Father Garcia initiated these meetings and reached out to all Latino students, irrespective of their ethnic background. The major topic of discussion at these meetings was the need to become politically conscious and active as Latino students and unification of all Latinos. Founding Father Garcia proposed the idea of founding a fraternity. He believed this structure would best meet the needs of the Latinos by promoting unity through brotherhood. On December 1st, 1975 in Room 400 Willis Hall at Kean University History was made. Lambda Theta Phi, THE FIRST LATINO FRATERNITY was born.

On March 15, 1998 six men sought to bring an organization of pride, history, and tradition to the campus of New Jersey City University. Alider Prattz, Dario Diaz Jr., Alex Garcia, Nelson Hernandez-Toro, Francisco Guzman, and Ronny Santiago established the first Latin Fraternity on the NJCU campus and became the Alpha Pi Chapter of Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity Inc, A revolution began in NJCU and 13 years later Alpha Pi Chapter is stronger than ever with more than 30+ brothers and still growing stronger than ever.
