Chapter History

During the Spring 2001 semester, Marco A. Benavides was contacted by leadership of Lambda Theta Phi to discuss the possibility of founding a new chapter at Texas State University. Having been in involved in several organization, Marco thought this would be an excellent idea since the University could use another Fraternity on campus that embraced Latin unity and empowerment. Marco was introduced to Brothers Adam Camacho and Chris Diaz, both transfer students from Beta Beta Chapter (University of Texas at Arlington), and Refugio “Rufus” Orozco.

Within several weeks, an interest group flourished and began working toward the initial criteria to establish a chapter.

On November 18, 2001, a colony was successfully established by Marco Benavides and Refugio Orozco. The two Founding Brothers and two transfer Brothers met high resistance by the Multicultural Greek Council and was denied a charter on campus. With only one fraternity in the council, the brothers could not understand why they kept being told there was too much competition already.

In the Spring of 2002, members of Lambda’s National Executive Board went into meetings with the University’s administration to discuss the denial of a charter. The NEB successfully negotiated entrance into the council and the colony became fully established.

The colony would soon become one of the most active in the State of Texas, winning several awards – amongst them were Colony of the Year, Highest GPA on campus, and Best New Organization on Campus. The colony was granted Chapter status in the Spring of 2004 and dubbed Beta Rho Chapter.
