Community Service
Second Harvest Food Truck
The second Wednesday of every
month we report to Clyde Arbuckle Elementary School on the East Side of San
Jose. Second Harvest Food Bank sends a truck with vegetables and fruits to
give out to local families. We set up the tables and hand out the food to
every single family until we run out of food. Every month more families come
to the event. We are very close to feeding 100 families with fresh produce
every month.
Mesa Verde Project
Sacred Heart Community Service
Center started the project in September 2009 and we have helped ever since.
The first event we installed raised bed gardens in local, low income homes.
In October of the same year we went back to the homes and helped plant seeds
for vegetables and fruits. We continue to go to the homes every October and
April to plant new vegetables and fruits. The goal of the program is to give
low income families their own gardens to grow their own foods, and establish
a community bond by giving their neighbors any leftover vegetables their
gardens produce.

Dia De Los Muertos Carnival
Sacred Heart hosts a carnival every year for Dia
De Los Muertos. This is a Mexican holiday where
family and friends pay tribute to the day and set up altars to show them that
they still remember about them. We help out in the carnival by setting up for
the event, running the carnival games kids play, and cleaning up after the
event. Aztec dancers and folklorico groups also
participate in the event adding their history to the carnaval.

Adopt-A-Classroom
Every December, in
collaboration with Sigma Omega Phi Sorority, we adopt a classroom on the East
Side of San Jose that is missing the basic school supplies. We ask for a wish
list and get as many of those supplies as possible. We go and do an Arts
& Crafts activity with the students the day we deliver the supplies and
talk to them a little about the importance of school and get them thinking
about college.

Adopt-A-Family
Along with Adopt-A-Classroom,
we also adopt a family with the ladies of Sigma Omega Phi. We choose a family
that is having trouble meeting their basic needs. We adopt them and ask them
for a list of things that they need and a wish list from their children for
the holiday season. Our main objective every year when having this event is
to assure that the family we adopt can forget about their problems for a
moment and enjoy the holiday season with their family.

Making Strides Against Cancer
Every October we participate in
the Making Strides Against Cancer walk in downtown San Jose. We fundraise for
the event and host workshops regarding cancer. We want to do everything we
can to help fight cancer, and we know every little counts.

Grant Boys
We mentor fifth grade boys at
Grant Academy Elementary School. The school is located in a gang influenced area,
and the kids get to see its activities every day. The school only has one
male teacher, so they are not used to being around males. They do not have a
positive male role model as either their dad has never been part of their
life or he uses alcohol/drugs in front of them. We go in to help them out in
school and to show them the importance of staying in school and continuing on
to college.
On top of these community
services, we also do other events that come up throughout the years. The
events above are the ones that we continue to do year after year.

Socials
We have socials with other
organizations on campus and in other campuses in the area. A social consists of
two organizations getting together to either play games or hang out. Below
are some pictures of the socials we have had in the last couple of months.

Athletics
Salsa
Classic
The
last weekend of April we participate in Salsa Classic. It’s a sports
tournament in which fraternities and sororities in our council play against
each other. The fraternities compete in basketball, football, and soccer
while sororities participate in soccer, basketball, and volleyball. The
organization with the most wins at the end of the tournament wins and has
bragging rights for the rest of the year.

Brotherhood Events
We often have dinners with our
alumni to catch up on our life and to get advice from them. We do not get to see
them as often as we wished because of their busy lives but they do make some
time every so often to hang out with us and see how we are doing.
