ALBUQUERQUE, NM – This weekend brothers from all three chapters in Arizona and New Mexico assembled at the University of New Mexico campus for the fourth annual leadership summit to exchange ideas on how to better their chapters and the sector.
Brother David Machado (Gamma Beta) delivered a workshop on how to improve a chapter fast, focusing on understanding how to take advantage of the strengths brothers bring to each chapter. This workshop spurred great discussion from brothers at all three chapters, and helped set the bar for what the sector hopes to accomplish throughout the year.
After lunch, brothers participated in an activity demonstrating the dynamics of power and privilege. This was a great starting point for dialogue about the values of diversity, identity and equality. Many brothers were also able to share personal experiences where privilege, or lack there of, had played an important role in their personal development.
The summit ended with a competition to develop a sector salute. Three teams came up with some great ideas, and all can be found on the sector drop box. The goal is to pull together a final version of the salute at the AZNM Brotherhood Retreat, occurring January 15, 2011.
The AZNM Executive Board would like to thank the brothers of Alpha Upsilon Chapter, especially Tony Ogaz-Muñoz and Fernando Gonzalez for opening their homes to visiting brothers. The Arizona brothers had an excellent time, and look forward to returning to New Mexico soon.
