TEMPE, AZ - Brothers from Alpha Sigma chapter were presented with the high honor of being selected to perform at the 2009 ASU Spring Commencement to a packed Sun Devil Stadium (71,000 people) and President Barack Obama. One of the brothers, James Randall, also celebrated his graduation, completing a B.S. in Anthropology.

Arizona / New Mexico Sector Celebrates Largest, Most Advanced Graduating Class in History

ARIZONA & NEW MEXICO - Brothers from all four entities in Arizona / New Mexico Sector will be celebrating the completion of their studies at both undergraduate and graduate levels. This will be the largest number of brothers to graduate in one semester (11) in AZNM's four-year history (2 years with New Mexico chapters). It will also be the first time, as a sector, brothers have graduated with master's degrees and the first set of graduate degrees for brothers from Gamma Beta chapter at The University of Arizona.

Gamma Beta Brother Selected for Prestigious CDC Fellowship

TUCSON, AZ - Gamma Beta Brother Omar Contreras (Fall 2008) was recently selected for a prestigious fellowship with the Centers for Disease Control and Presentation (CDC) in Atlanta, GA. Brother Contreras will be working with other public health professionals in the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) in the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity Prevention. He will be working specifically with epidemiologists on identifying demographic characteristics of individuals who have multiple behavioral risk factors for obesity and overweight. The fellowship can last for up to two years and is in conjunction with the Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH). Brother Contreras will be one of only 20 individuals in the country selected for CDC fellowships this year.

Omar Contreras is a graduate student in the Mel & Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health and will complete his studies in May with a Master's in Public Health (MPH) with an emphasis in epidemiology. In addition to his new fellowship, Brother Contreras is also the recipient of the 2008 Centennial Award, a recognition given to only one minority student at each level of study per year. He is also the recipient of the Russell H. Swanson Public Health Scholarship, the Andrew J. Nichols Scholarship and was selected as an EXPORT Fellow in 2007. Prior to his graduate work, Brother Contreras had the opportunity to serve as a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Fellow at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD.

In his spare time, Brother Contreras serves as president of the Public Health Student Alliance, co-chaired the 2008 MPH Internship Conference and the 2008 Diversity Celebration and was co-captain of the Diabetes Walk. He currently works as a research associate in the UA College of Nursing, investigating the exercise program adherence in diabetic adolescents.

Brother Contreras is a true example of a Lambda man, and an amazing role model for young Latino men. We are proud of his accomplishments and wish him much success in Atlanta this summer!

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – The Gentlemen of Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, Inc. Alpha Upsilon Chapter at The University of New Mexico will host the New Mexico Youth Leadership Symposium on UNM’s Main Campus on April 17, 2009. This one-day intensive leadership experience will give local high school students the opportunity to gain skills and information necessary for successful matriculation into an institution of higher education. Using resources from the university and Albuquerque community, the fraternity has put together an exciting program that will feature presentations ranging from how to dress for success, to how to be an effective leader. The Brothers of Alpha Upsilon Chapter will also host a presentation regarding the

use of community service opportunities as a means of gaining leadership skills and roles in the community while simultaneously enriching it.

Any Albuquerque Public Schools junior is eligible for the program, though sophomores and seniors will also be considered. More information is available at http://www.nmyls.org. This program will ensure that high school students that attend will leave with the information and skills necessary to become successful college students.

LAMBDA THETA PHI LATIN FRATERNITY, INC. – ALPHA UPSILON CHAPTER RECEIVES CHAPTER OF EXCELLENCE AWARD

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – The Gentlemen of Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, Inc. Alpha Upsilon Chapter at The University of New Mexico had a very successful year in 2008. The chapter was recognized during an awards banquet in 8 out of a possible 9 categories that include: campus involvement, chapter management, community service, membership education and development, recruitment, risk management, outreach, and public relations. The chapter was also one of only four Greek-letter organizations to be awarded the 5 Star Chapter of Excellence award, and was the only fraternity to do so.

Over the course of 2008, the Brothers of Alpha Upsilon Chapter completed over 1,200 community service hours (more than 10 percent of the total number of community service hours completed by all UNM Greeks), with an average of over 100 hours per brother, all while maintaining an average GPA of 3.13, the highest among fraternities.

Individual brothers have also had great success. Brother Chris Chaves was awarded the Greek Advancing the Community Award, the Clauve Outstanding Student Award, and was inducted into Who’s Who Among College Students in American Universities and Colleges along with Brothers Gian Chavez and Timoteo de la Serna. De la Serna was also recently accepted into UNM’s Research Opportunity Program and will be conducting undergraduate research with a faculty mentor.

The Brothers of Alpha Upsilon will continue to strive for excellence in 2009 by serving our community and our university in every way that we can.

Spring Break in Portales, NM

Brothers from Gamma Beta made the long trek from Tucson to Portales during the UA spring break to help Brother Juan Prado (Spring 2005) promote the fraternity and enhance recruitment on the Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) campus. The brothers tabled in the student union for both days and met with members of the four other fraternal organizations on campus: Chi Omega, Zeta Tau Alpha, Sigma Chi and Kappa Sigma.

Eastern New Mexico University Colony was founded in the summer of 2004 at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, New Mexico. Although it has only been in existence for just under five years, ENMU Colony has developed a well-known signature outreach event known as the Latino Youth Symposium which seeks to increase the participation of young latinos in higher education and their communities.

Alpha Sigma Wins ASU Greek Awards

Alpha Sigma Chapter (Arizona State University) received several awards recently at the university's annual Greek Awards presentation. The chapter was recognized for:

Excellence in Chapter Management
Excellence in Campus, Community, & Interfraternity Affairs

The chapter also was awarded the Arizona State University Gold Pillar Award. The Gold Pillar Award is given to chapters that achieve at least 90% of the Greek Awards application points.

Additionally brother Marcos Valdez (Fall 2005), was recognized as Fraternity Man of the Year.

Alpha Sigma Chapter was founded on March 22, 1998 at Arizona State University. With over 67,000 students, Arizona State University is the largest university in the United States. Alpha Sigma Chapter is the oldest entity of Lambda Theta Phi in the state of Arizona, and has contributed much to the Phoenix community in its 11 year history through service, activism and fostering Greek and Latino unity.

Fraternity collects record 15,000 toys to benefit Salvation Army, others

TUCSON, AZ - December 8th, 2008 - This past weekend, Lambda Theta Phi's Gamma Beta Chapter at the University of Arizona took part in their 3rd annual 24 Hour Toy Drive, and in a time of economic hardship they witnessed generosity of epic proportions. The drive was held on December 5th and 6th, totaling 24 hours between the two days. The drive was hosted by the Wal-Mart Super center on West Valencia Road in Tucson, AZ. In partnership with the Salvation Army, and through the cooperation of Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority, Inc., the fraternity shattered its goal of 2,000 toys, raising over 15,000 new toys for less fortunate children in the Tucson and Southern Arizona area. With great thanks to Lisa Frank Incorporated for a deeply generous donation, the fraternity extends a sincere thanks to the community for helping in its cause.

All toys collected will benefit the Salvation Army’s Christmas Angel Toy Drive, as well as a local event called "Miracle on 31st street", who gives out toys to the children of South Tucson on Christmas eve. "I speak on behalf of our entire organization when I say that we continue to be blessed by the generosity of our community every holiday season", said chapter President David Machado, who has been a brother of the fraternity for more than three years. "We have a commitment to our community that we intend to fulfill every year," said Chapter Vice President and Director of Public Relations Adam Grijalva. In future years, the fraternity hopes to bring together more organizations of multicultural roots to participate in their event, making sure every child in Southern Arizona has a joyous holiday season.

AZNM Begins New Rivalry with UA vs. UNM Football Game

ALBUQUERQUE, NM - The brothers of Arizona/New Mexico Sector 1 began a new chapter in sector history yesterday as they solidified a new rivalry game between the two states. Brothers from Gamma Beta Chapter at The University of Arizona drove up to Albuquerque to face off with brothers from Alpha Upsilon Chapter at the University of New Mexico.

Brothers began the day with a relaxing tailgate complete with hamburgers, hot dogs and Rock Band. The UNM brothers were exceptional hosts and set up a large tent complete with couches, TV and music.

After the tailgate, everyone moved into the UNM football stadium to see the Lobos defeat the Wildcats 36 to 28. After the game, brothers reunited for an evening celebration.

AZNM Sector Sets Plans for Future

TEMPE, AZ - Members from Alpha Sigma (ASU), Alpha Upsilon (UNM) and Gamma Beta (UA) chapters met with the AZNM Sector Executive Board for the 2nd Annual AZNM Leadership Summit at Arizona State University on August 16, 2008. Members presented on best practices with regard to chapter management, event planning and induction practices, as well as setting goals for the 2008-2009 school year and beyond.

"One of our main goals in hosting the summit every year is to evaluate our strengths as a sector and plan to build upon them as we move into the future. We have a lot of great energy right now, and it's important that we direct it strategically," said Sector Vice President Patrick Bryan.

Just one year ago the sector held its first Leadership Summit in Las Cruces, NM to begin the unification of Arizona and New Mexico chapters into a unified sector. Now that the development process is over, the sector has set its sights on planning for the future and enhancing existing efforts for the betterment of Lambda Theta Phi in the Southwestern United States.

Alpha Upsilon, Alpha Sigma Bring Home National Awards

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity Inc. held its 32nd Anniversary Banquet, concluding the National Convention in San Francisco and bestowing two AZNM chapters with awards.

Chapter of the Year, the highest honor given to a chapter, was awarded to Alpha Upsilon Chapter of the University of New Mexico, the third time in the chapter's ten year history. Among the many events the chapter posted in the last year, highlights included raising $1,200 for the Peruvian Relief Effort, and their extensive mentorship program.

Undergraduate Brother of the Year, an award recognizing one undergraduate brother's contribution in the areas of leadership, scholarship and brotherhood, went to Arizona State University's Alpha Sigma Chapter President, James Randall. In addition to his leadership within the fraternity, Brother Randall was also recognized for his significant contributions to S.T.E.P. through leadership and service.

Congratulations to all AZNM brothers for a successful inaugural year as a unified Arizona and New Mexico sector. These awards are surely just the beginning of a bright future.

5th Annual NALFO Penny Drive

RUTHERFORD, NJ- In its 5th consecutive year, the National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations (NALFO) and its affiliate members reunite in their "Quest for a Million Pennies". The St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is unlike any other pediatric research and treatment facility of its kind. Due to its innovative scientific research, its discoveries have revolutionized the field of medicine concerning treatment of cancer and other catastrophic diseases that affect children. With the shared vision of St. Jude and NALFO, we continue to raise funds and awareness for this notable cause. The generosity of all participants will allow for St. Jude to continue its significant role as the 3rd largest healthcare charity facility that ensures the treatment of all patients, without regard for the families' ability to pay.

Lambda Theta Phi has made it a prerogative to assist NALFO with this event, which benefits the surrounding communities on a National scale. Last year, Lambda raised over 2,000 dollars. We are dedicated to the betterment of the community through service. As the first nationally recognized Latino Fraternity, we strive to take action in this event and have committed the help of all chapters and colonies to make it a success. Alpha Sigma Cleans House at 2008 ASU Greek Awards

Tempe, AZ - Congratulations to the Alpha Sigma Chapter of Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity Inc. and its brothers for the myriad awards received at the 2008 ASU Greek Awards Ceremony. Not only did Alpha Sigma sweep the highest chapter honors, but also two highly prized individual awards:

Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, Inc originated at Kean University in Union, New Jersey in 1975, and has extended from New York to California and many states in between. Their purpose is to embody the foundations of Unity, Respect, Brotherhood, Culture, and Pride, all the while excelling in the classroom and becoming a leaders of great impact to their organization, their family, and their community.

Alpha Sigma Chapter, founded March 22, 1998 has had a long standing history of excellence in Greek Life at Arizona State University, and will soon celebrate its 10th year of existence on campus. The anniversary is not only a milestone for the chapter, but also of great significance to the fraternity, marking the emergence of Lambda Theta Phi in the Southwest United States.

ALBUQUERQUE, NM - On Saturday, January 19, the Arizona New Mexico Sector of Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, Inc. hosted its second brotherhood retreat in Albuquerque, NM. Aptly named "Conqueror," the retreat required brothers to employ their knowledge of the city of Albuquerque, the fraternity and themselves to win. Five teams of three competed in various challenges, culminating in a salute competition outside the Student Union Building (SUB) at the University of New Mexico.

First place winners were awarded $50 gift certificates to CollegiateGreek.com, and included brothers Jose Rodriguez and Andrew Provencio from Gamma Beta and Adan Gonzales from Alpha Upsilon. Second place was awarded a free dinner at El Pinto Restaurant in Albuquerque, with the prize going to brothers Jesus Arenas and Art Gonzalez from Gamma Beta and Chris Chaves from Alpha Upsilon.

The sector also bestowed the honor of salute champion of the year to Alpha Upsilon Chapter. The award, formerly given to chapters in the Arizona 1 Sector, will be altered to include the name of the past winner, Alpha Sigma, and the new title of Arizona New Mexico Sector Salute Champion of the Year.

The next brotherhood retreat will occur next January at The University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona.

Gamma Beta Chapter Raises 1,300 Toys for Southern Arizona Youth

Lambda theta Phi - Gamma Beta Chapter - 2nd annual Toy Drive Huge Success

TUCSON, AZ - Lambda theta Phi's Gamma Beta Chapter at the University of Arizona recently took part in their 2nd annual 24 Hour Toy Drive, hoping to double the 300 toys they collected last year. The toy drive was held on December 14th and 15th, totaling 24 hours between two days. The drive was hosted by the Wal-Mart Super center on West Valencia Road in Tucson, AZ. Along with the help of the Organization of Women Looking for Sisterhood in Chi Upsilon Sigma ( O.L.W.S. in C.U.S.), the fraternity shattered its goal, raising over 1,300 new toys for less fortunate children in the Tucson and Southern Arizona area. Along with thanks for a greatly generous donation by Lisa Frank Incorporated, the fraternity extends a sincere thanks to the community for helping in its cause.

All toys raised directly benefited the Frank and Edith Morton Boys and Girls Club of Tucson, as well as a local event called "Miracle on 31st street", who gives out toys to the children of south Tucson on Christmas eve. "This event directly characterizes our organization's purpose, both in the community and as role-models for our fellow students", said chapter President David Machado, who has been a brother of the fraternity for more than two years. "U of A students can impact this city in ways we can't imagine, all we need is to do a little work". The fraternity hopes in future years to unite all organization of multicultural roots to participate in the event, making the effect greater and more expansive than ever.

AZNM Sector Hosts First Annual Anniversary Dinner

TUCSON, AZ - On December 1, 2007 Arizona Sector One of Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity Inc. successfully held its first ever Anniversary Dinner at Dragon's View Restaurant to commemorate the December 1 national founding date for the fraternity. The event was the first event to bring together a large number brothers from the three chapters, spanning two states.

Tucson was selected for the first dinner due to the sector board's location and the large number of fraternity members in Southern Arizona. The event is planned to continue next year in Albuquerque, New Mexico, home to the sector's next largest concentration of members.

With 50 people in attendance, awards were given to individual members and chapter entities for success and achievement. Award winners included:
